Harvard College Announces Standardized Test Requirement for Fall 2025 Admissions
In a recent announcement, Harvard College revealed that standardized test scores will be required for admissions beginning in the fall of 2025. The new policy will specifically apply to the Class of 2029 admissions cycle, with exceptions made for other eligible tests in exceptional cases.
Standardized tests have long been seen as predictive of success in college and beyond, a belief supported by research conducted by Harvard Professors Raj Chetty and David J. Deming. Additionally, access to standardized testing is viewed as a fairer evaluation method for disadvantaged applicants.
During the pandemic, Harvard implemented a test-optional policy, but the majority of applicants still submitted test scores. Admissions decisions are based on a variety of factors, with test scores being just one piece of the puzzle.
Resources such as Khan Academy offer free test preparation tools for those interested in improving their scores. Students who may face barriers to traditional testing are encouraged to apply using alternative forms of assessment.
By reinstating the standardized test requirement, Harvard hopes to identify and support promising students from all backgrounds. The university aims to create a diverse and inclusive student body with this change in admissions policy.
