The Diamondbacks Make Major Pitching Move with Jordan Montgomery Signing
In a surprising move, the Arizona Diamondbacks have reportedly reached a one-year, $25 million agreement with left-hander Jordan Montgomery. The deal, which includes a $20 million vesting player option for the 2025 season, is pending a physical examination.
Montgomery, who played a crucial role in the Texas Rangers’ 2023 World Series win against the Diamondbacks, will be joining his fourth team in the past three seasons. Known for his impressive performance in St. Louis and Texas, the addition of Montgomery strengthens the Diamondbacks’ starting rotation, which struggled in 2023.
This signing comes after the Diamondbacks also inked Eduardo Rodriguez to a four-year, $80 million deal in December. However, there are concerns about the availability of both major pitching additions as they are currently dealing with injuries.
In an effort to return to the postseason in 2024 and establish themselves as top contenders in the NL, the Diamondbacks have made significant additions to their outfield and infield. With the addition of Montgomery, the Diamondbacks’ payroll has reached new record levels.
Montgomery will start the 2024 season in the minor leagues to ramp up for the season, with the option to opt out of the deal if he starts at least ten games in 2024. Additionally, he will be ineligible for a qualifying offer from the Diamondbacks this winter if he returns to free agency.
The agreement was first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, with salary details reported by Jon Heyman and additional details by Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Stay tuned for more updates on this major move in the MLB.
