Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has issued a stark warning to Europe, stating that the continent is currently in a “pre-war era” and must be ready to confront the threat posed by Russia. Tusk emphasized that war is no longer a thing of the past and that any scenario is possible, with Europe facing its most concerning situation since 1945.
European leaders and military officials are increasingly worried about the conflict in Ukraine potentially spilling over into other countries on Russia’s border. In response, countries like Sweden, Finland, Estonia, and Lithuania have taken steps to bolster their defense capabilities.
The “Weimar Triangle” of France, Germany, and Poland is spearheading Europe’s efforts to rearm and protect against further Russian aggression. Tusk stressed the importance of Europe being independent and self-sufficient in defense while maintaining a strong alliance with the United States.
Tusk also warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin could use a terrorist attack in Moscow as an excuse to escalate the conflict in Ukraine. Despite efforts to strengthen defense, Tusk acknowledged that Europe still has a long way to go in preparing for potential conflict.
Additionally, Tusk expressed concerns that former US President Donald Trump’s comments on NATO defense spending could impact transatlantic relations. The need for a united front against potential threats is more important than ever, according to Tusk, as Europe navigates a precarious geopolitical landscape.
