India’s Space Program Kicks off 2024 with Exciting Orbital Launch
India’s ambitious orbital launch calendar for 2024 is set to begin in the early hours of January 1st. Scheduled for 0340 UTC, a rocket known as PSLV-DL variant of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle will take off, carrying two crucial spacecraft: the X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) and the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-3 (POEM-3).
The XPoSat mission holds significant importance for India as it marks the country’s first-ever X-ray astronomy endeavor. Its primary objective is to study polarization in X-ray emissions from celestial sources, which can provide valuable insights into the behavior of cosmic entities. The mission is designed to last for a minimum of five years and aims to investigate approximately 50 cosmic sources using the principle of particle acceleration known as Thomson Scattering.
XPoSat features two essential instruments: POLIX, an X-ray Polarimeter, and XSPECT, a tool used for monitoring spectral state changes in X-ray emission. These instruments will play a crucial role in gathering data and advancing our understanding of X-ray emissions from celestial bodies.
The PSLV-DL rocket will also host the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-3 (POEM-3), which will remain attached to the uppermost stage throughout the mission. POEM-3 will carry various payloads from the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe). This collaboration reinforces India’s commitment to fostering innovation and cooperation within the space industry.
