Google’s Find My Device feature has taken a major step forward with the ability to locate Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones even when they are turned off or have a dead battery. This new capability has been implemented to help in cases of phone theft or loss overnight.
Users setting up the Find My Device network will receive a notification about this feature. The new capability allows the devices to be located for “several hours” after the phone runs out of battery or is turned off.
To activate this feature, users can choose between two options in the Find My Device settings: “With network in high-traffic areas only” or “With network in all areas.” Google recommends selecting the latter for a quicker location of lost items.
Even in lower-traffic areas where only the device has detected and shared its location, this feature still works. Google did not specify the required version for this capability, but it was already active as of April.
For optimal functionality, Google recommends keeping Bluetooth and Location settings turned on even when the phone is shut down. This new capability is made possible by specialized Pixel hardware, with plans to eventually extend this feature to other OEMs and chipmakers.
This innovative feature adds an extra layer of security for Pixel 8 and 8 Pro users, ensuring that their devices can still be located even in the most challenging circumstances. Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting development.
