Turkey’s Main Opposition Party Makes Major Gains in Local Elections
In a surprising turn of events, Turkey’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), secured control over key cities and provinces in Sunday’s local elections, dealing a significant blow to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling party.
Incumbent Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, representing the CHP, emerged victorious in Turkey’s largest city, holding a wide lead over his opponent. Meanwhile, Mansur Yavas, the mayor of Ankara, comfortably retained his seat with a substantial 25-point difference.
The CHP’s success extended beyond the major cities, as they also claimed victory in municipalities across 36 of Turkey’s 81 provinces. Analysts attribute this unexpected outcome to voters expressing their discontent with the ruling party’s handling of the economy, which has been plagued by high inflation and economic challenges.
President Erdogan acknowledged the defeat and promised to reflect on the message conveyed by the voters, recognizing the need for self-criticism and correction of mistakes within his party.
The voter turnout was high, with over 61 million eligible voters participating in the election. While the overall conduct of the election was peaceful, isolated incidents of violence were reported in Diyarbakir and Sanliurfa, resulting in casualties.
Imamoglu’s victory in Istanbul has positioned him as a potential contender for the presidency in 2028, challenging Erdogan’s longstanding rule. Additionally, Erdogan’s party faced dissent from some supporters, who diverted their votes to the New Welfare Party (YRP), a new religious-conservative party.
In the Kurdish-populated southeast, the pro-Kurdish DEM Party made significant gains in municipalities, although their ability to retain control remains uncertain.
Erdogan’s ambitions for a new constitution that would extend his term beyond 2028 have been met with resistance from the opposition, as the CHP’s success in the local elections signals a shift in political dynamics within Turkey.
