Paramount Rejects Overhauled Script for “Killers of the Flower Moon” According to Martin Scorsese
In a surprising turn of events, Paramount Pictures rejected the overhauled script for “Killers of the Flower Moon” before it was even finalized, as revealed by director Martin Scorsese. The highly anticipated film, based on David Grann’s book, was initially planned to be a faithful adaptation. However, Leonardo DiCaprio’s request for a script overhaul changed the entire perspective of the film.
The original script focused on the FBI agents investigating the murders that plagued the Osage Nation in Oklahoma during the 1920s. However, DiCaprio expressed his desire to shift the focus to the perspective of the Osage Nation itself. This creative decision led to an entirely new script, taking the film in a different direction.
Admitting that the initial attempt had failed, Scorsese acknowledged that the first script was a straightforward procedural drama, which was not his expertise. The acclaimed director saw the need for a fresh approach to the story, one that would resonate with audiences on a deeper level.
The new script centers around the complex marriage between Ernest Burkhart, portrayed by DiCaprio, and his Osage wife Mollie, played by Lily Gladstone. By shifting the narrative focus to their relationship, the film captures the emotional journey experienced by the Osage people during that tumultuous time. Jesse Plemons joined the cast, taking on the supporting role of Tom White, while the FBI storyline became a subplot.
Unfortunately, Paramount Pictures, who initially preferred the procedural take on the film, decided to part ways with the project due to the new script and the subsequent ballooning budget. However, Apple stepped in to finance the ambitious $200 million project, with Paramount rejoining as a theatrical distribution partner.
Fans can now mark their calendars, as “Killers of the Flower Moon” is set to hit theaters on October 20th. With an all-star cast and a fresh perspective, this highly anticipated film is poised to captivate audiences around the world.
