American detainee in Russia hopeful for release following US efforts
Paul Whelan, an American citizen who has been detained in Russia for over five years, recently shared his optimism about US efforts to secure his release in a call with CNN. However, he also expressed concerns about the recent arrest of a US soldier in Russia and its potential impact on negotiations for his own release and that of detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich.
US Staff Sgt. Gordon Black recently traveled to Russia without permission and was arrested on theft charges. Whelan voiced worry that if Black is designated as wrongfully detained, negotiations for his release may have to restart. Despite previously feeling depressed about the lack of progress in his case, Whelan is now more positive due to ongoing negotiations and efforts being made by the Biden administration.
The Biden administration has proposed several plans to Russia in an effort to secure Whelan’s release. Secretary of State Blinken has also spoken with Whelan multiple times, assuring him that efforts are being made on his behalf. Whelan hopes to speak with top US officials to raise awareness about his situation and seek their assistance in securing his release.
With both optimism and concerns about the ongoing negotiations, Whelan remains hopeful for his release from detention in Russia. The support and efforts of the US government have given him renewed hope, despite the potential complications posed by the recent arrest of a US soldier in the country.
