U.S. House Approves $61 Billion Aid Package for Ukraine Amid Russian Aggression
In a rare Saturday session, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a hefty $61 billion aid package for Ukraine, including $13.8 billion for military weapons. The move was welcomed by Ukrainian and Western leaders, who see it as a crucial step in supporting Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the U.S. support, calling the aid package a powerful signal to the Kremlin. With Russian forces advancing in the war, Ukrainian soldiers are facing ammunition shortages, forcing commanding officers to ration shells.
European leaders joined in praising the U.S. decision to provide aid to Ukraine, emphasizing their support for the country against Russia. However, the Kremlin warned that the U.S. aid package would only lead to more deaths and further conflict.
Despite the immediate relief provided by the aid package, think tanks and analysts say that more funding and long-term planning are needed to stabilize Ukraine’s position in the conflict. Russia’s Defense Ministry announced control of a village in the Donetsk region, with shelling continuing in various areas.
In a separate incident, two suspects were detained after Ukrainian soldiers killed a police officer at a checkpoint in the Vinnytsia region. The U.S. Senate is expected to pass the aid package, with President Joe Biden promising to sign it immediately to provide crucial support to Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.
